Representatives from the Monterey County Salinas Valley Basin Groundwater Sustainability Agency and Monterey County Water Resources Agency have identified sources of surface water in north Monterey County, another approach to protecting seawater intrusion.

This full presentation was released in February 2026.
The New Seawater Intrusion Protection (NSIP) Project lists the following goals:
- Investigate potential source water that can be utilized to offset groundwater pumping.
- Identify and prioritize areas/users that could be served by potential sources – focused on demands in areas at risk of SWI.
- Identify infrastructure needs and siting for serving new users.
- Develop alternatives for paired source waters and infrastructure systems that will be used to estimate project costs.
